Busy Weekend

You would think that the weekend is here, let the rest begin. Who needs rest? Saturday morning, I met up with my General Chairman, and the Spring Ceremonial Team at Port Huron High School. We conducted a site visit of the newly remodeled/constructed performing arts theater. This is definitely not my high school, what a large multi-connected series of buildings, athletic facilities and theater. The Theater is on par with any I have witnessed and am very jealous that the younger generation has this opportunity to utilize this resource.

However, we are fortunate, in that it will serve our needs very well. The Director of the Dramatic Corp was impressed by the stage, and the D-Staff reps were happy as well. The theater, and adjoining cafeteria setting will provide for one memorable event for all the newly created Nobles.

We then drove to the famous Thomas Edison Inn. We were given a tour of the hospitality suites and configuration. It looks like the Shriners will once again take over an entire floor, and the Inn's staff are not only looking forward to hosting us, they have given us almost every amnenity to host a great weekend.

We have not held a ceremonial outside our southfield center in over 5 years. We have a new group of Nobles who have repeatedly asked when we are going away, in order for them to create the bonds that the veterans created in years gone by. It is going to happen in May. We look forward to providing the venue, and of course the Camel's Milk, with some juicy steaks thrown in, to revive the bonds of Shriners.

I got home around 4:00 P.M., which gave me enough time to put on my tuxedo and potentate bling, and drive out to Westland, for the Al Hambra Past Commanders Ball. The International Order of Al Hambra is a fraternity comprised of men of the Catholic Faith. There are 8 caravans in SE Michigan, with a total of 700 members. They wear white fezzes and follow similiar initiations as the Shriners. We have developed a fantastic relationship over the years, including a monthly lunch get together, referred to as The Red/White Fez Club. They also pursue a charitable philantrophy of special-needs childrens and adults. Each Caravan is led by a "Commander" and annually they celebrate the men who have served as Commanders. Last year the Divan attended this successful event, and I am proud to say the entire Divan and their ladies were in attendance this evening. The food was very good and the company even better.

On a side note, the international conventions of both organizations were held a week apart in San Antonion last year, and we are combining our efforts in establishing the first Red/White Fez Club between the Al Zafar Shriners in San Antonio and their Al Hambra counterparts.

Carrie and I left around 10:30 and got home aroung 11:15, tried to stay up for the opening scene of SNL, and I was unsuccessful. Oh Well.

I am writing this on Sunday morning, this is the dedicated day Carrie and I will attempt to clean the house. Our schedules have not allowed us to maintain the usual clean state in which we both like to keep our home, but days like this are appreciateed. Our joint efforts will allow us to clean the entire house in about 2 hours. Yeah, Day Off.

Enjoy the cold, and yes, it is cold.

Convincing the Chief Rabban to love Technology

A little aside from my usual posts.

Our beloved South Dakotan Chief Rabban is mocking my blog. If I can do anything this year is to convince him to dedicate his time to communicate by any means necessary. Of course, I may be shooting myself in the foot by attempting to get him to converse more than usual.

Seriously, I love our Divan, what a great group of guys, we range from 39 to 72 years old, from health care professionals, engineers, union leader, college professors, ex-law inforcement, private investigator, retired electricians. Where else would get a diverse group of people, from all walks of life.

Perhaps, I will have to share my best stories of each of them at a later date, hmmmm?

Tue. & Wed. (1/27-28)

I cannot believe that it is the end of January. I do not want to jinx our winter, but is anyone else amazed at the amount of snow we have had (okay, I did not commit to either too much or too little). Only about 7 weeks until the tulips sprout. I also cannot believe that we are almost into the February part of the calendar, it is going to be a great month, with some travelling and time off of work.

Wednesday: I went to to the Shrine Center. Every now and then, the Shrine, as I presume is the case with any organization, receives business opportunities from new ventures. It is up to the leaders to sift through the extreme and/or ridiculous ideas and bring to the table some realistic presentations. One such presentation was brought to the Board of Directors this evening. In essence it is a direct marketing enterprise that supposedly has been approved by our Shriners International HQ.

I have to say it was a nice presentation, but of course I cannot commit to any contract. I say this, because it is in our by laws that any contract must receive the approval of our General Counsel (Shrine Attorney), prior to my signing. Also, I cannot sign a contract that would oblige any other year besides the year I am Potetate, without the signature of other Board Members.

Therefore, we will have to go through the entire process prior to any possible colloboration.

Thursday, Jan. 28: DAY OFF, DAY OFF (SORT OF) I took my car in for a needed oil change (I have 76000 miles in 3 years). I took my Bride out to dinner and spent some time on the phone afterwards with the circus director.

We are in the last hours of any possible circus commitment for the year. If we cannot get the Governor to give us access to the State Fairgrounds, we have no Circus. As you can imagine, I have been following the discussion on the State Fairgrounds for the last year, until the Governor's actions in October padlocked the entire facility. I, and some of the other Directors, attended multiple "town hall" meetings at the fairgrounds and received a lot of knowledge. Of course, the Shrine Circus is the oldest tenant of the State Fairgrounds, and it is traditionally our home. I find it interesting that in order to keep the fairgrounds shut down costs hundred of thousands of dollars, due to the maintenance requirements of the sewage system that somehow ties in the city of Detroit, County of Wayne and the suburbs (I am sketchy on the details). You would think that some added revenue would be welcomed, I do not get it.

You saw Carrie's post, and I hope you take the time to sign the on line petition asking the Governor to reconsider. We shall see.

I am going to stop by the Shrine Center this evening after work to catch up on some mail. Other than that, life is good, life is good.

I have to say I am having fun, and it is because so many Nobles and their Ladies are so supportive of the Shriners, they make my life easy.

Until next time.....................

Help Save the Circus!

The Detroit News wrote an interesting article this morning about the Detroit Circus (check it out here). With the small exception of an error ("who help pay the medical costs of poor children") on the type of care we provide, it paints a good picture of the state of affairs with our 2010 Circus.

If you're interested in helping, you can sign the petition here. Just know that when you get the "donation" page, you can just close the website-- you don't need to donate to sign the petition.

Here's to crossing our fingers for access to the State Fair Grounds for the Circus this year!!

Tuesday January 26, 2010

We had our second Financial Advisory Committe meeting of the new year. This time the entire Board of Directors were present, which I have been encouraging. The Imperial Council By laws (which governs all subsidiary Shrine Centers) state that the Board of Directors are not only mandated, but obligated to approve all financial transactions of the Shrine, and ensure that all budgets are followed. I have always felt that everyone on the Board should be in attendance to understand the financial obligations of all our accounts.

First and foremost, we handle the General Fund, which currently is by far the largest account, and consists of the most bills and revenue. We then have the Moslem Temple Association accounts, which is the incorportation that holds the title/deed to the downtown garage (where the Child Care vehicles are stored and maintained). We also have the Hospital Transportation Fund budget, and multiple other budgets that we may generate in operating our Shrine Center (i.e. Commercial and Capital Budgets).

You can understand that it takes a while to understand all the nuances, and I firmly believe that in order to be an effective leader, you must be proactive in your ability to learn the local system.

Anyway, we had some very good discussion on the bills that were presented, questioned several items, requested further information and ended up with the belief that a commercial budget is probably the best way to proceed, in assisting in our financial picture, since we now run the entire facility.

Of course the night was not strictly business only, in the background (hallways) the melodic sounds of the bagpipes were heard throughout. It is Tuesday and, yes, every Tuesday the Higlanders meet. Did I mention EVERY Tuesday. The Highlanders meet more frequently than any other Unit/Club. Their membership has increased by dozens in the last several years, and they are once again turning into a distinguished pipe and drum band. Our goal (The Board of Directors) is to ensure that the newer members, as well as the Unit Veterans (those with 15 years of membership in the Unit) know all that is going on in the Shrine. The newer members tend to be pipers and drummers from bands around metro-Detroit that are having membership issues, and we are seeing the fortunate results.

I do not think that I have mentioned that one can learn the pipes without any experience. The Highlanders have trained instructors that will sit with you weekly to teach you to play the Recorder (a plastic elongated flute-like instrument), which is a precursor to mastering the bag pipes. I have been enchanted with bagpipes my entire life, and when I first joined the Shrine I visited the Highlanders room and asked about membership. I was still in school at the time and could not commit the time. However, I have been given serious thought to what to do when my commitment to the leadership of the Shrine is completed, and this is one very strong possibility.

By the way, at least twice during the evening I heard different renditions of "The Victors" by several Highlanders. Let me tell you, you have not heard a beautiful version of "The Victors" (although they all are great) until you hear them on the pipes. Go Blue!!!!

Early evening, left around 9:00 P.M. and spent some time with Carrie.

Thanks

Monday Jan. 25, 2010

Got to the Shrine center around 4:30 PM and had a very productive Board Meeting. It is the 4th Monday of the month, which means that Za Hur Din Ladies Oriental Shrine meets tonight. The L.O.S. is a female organization dedicated to female associates of Shriners. Although they are an independent organization, they are in tune with the Shriners. They wear very elaborate white fezzes, have their own units, and elaborate rituals.

Well I had received permission from their High Priestess to address the group prior their meeting. I wanted to let them know how appreciative I was to have them meet in our Shrine Center and provided some hopeful colloborative ideas for the year.

Following this brief meeting, I met with the Keystone Kops, Reception Unit and Directors Staff. I am so excited that the members of the Directors Staff are very high on the idea of the Spring Ceremonial in May being conducted in Port Huron.

It is now 9:30 and my bride left the shrine center, after attending the LOS meeting, and I am shutting down and following her.

Thank you for paying attention to us, we are new and not necessarily sure what you may want to read.

Yours in the Faith

Michael Dib

Weekend Review (Jan. 22 - 24)

I ended up at the Shrine Center on Friday evening for a meeting with my Commercial Oversight Committee. This committee is going to assist our general manager with creating a effecient, lean method of tracking our financial obligations of the commercial side. It was a very productive meeting, and once again I find myself in awe of the knowledge that our Nobles have over many areas. I find myself thinking where else would you find a collection of people from all cultures and socio-economic situations that meet on the Level and act in unison for the best of the organization, not out of obligation, but out of love for the group.

Saturday: Did I think that I would get some extra, well-deserved sleep, WRONG!!! Carrie and I were at the Shrine Center at 7:00 A.M. to get ready for her first ladies meeting. Her Chairladies did a fantastic job setting up the Nobles Lounge, decorated in maize and blue, with awesome fruits, donuts, and pastries. I did not attend the meeting and Carrie had to leave at 10:30 for a job seminar at a local hospital, but afterwards all the ladies told me what a wonderful job Carrie was doing. Did I expect anything else, of course not. Carrie has an incredible sense of organization and presentation skills that are unmatched. I am so envious of her talent.

As Carrie went to work for the rest of the day, I drove down to Taylor, MI and worked a 6 hour shift at the Charity Poker room that the Shrine had received a license for this weekend. This event was very successful and I had fun talking with some of the other Nobles assisting us, and in general all the players that showed up during the evening.

I did get home by 9:30 and Carrie and I had a late dinner/snack.

SUNDAY: DAY OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So what did I do, well finally, my Brother and I went to see Avatar in Imax 3D. This is by far one of the best movies I have seen, the story, the visual and sound effects, the entire movie was so well done. James Cameron is a genius.

I got home to watch the end of the Colts/Jets and the beginning of the Saints/Vikings. Two good games, I was not disappointed. Early Super Bowl pick: Colts by 6.

All in all, very good weekend. I am not going to comment on the weather, because I do not want to jinx what is going on this winter in SE Michigan, but there is no complaints from this part of Sterling Heights.

When you own 100 Shrine Shirts....

With each new Potentate, there is a new "logo", a new Shirt, new pins, and various other new things.

So, what exactly do you do with the "old" shirts? Last year's model (or for some, the last 20 years?) is shoved to the back of the closet.

I had a plan for the year. I would make quilts. (it sounded much easier in my head!). In August, Michael put out a call for old Shrine Shirts on the Detroit Shriners Yahoo Group. And the shirts poured in. And took over 5 laundry baskets in our basement. The generosity of Shriners is amazing!

I estimate that we received over 150 pieces of Shrine apparel. And then I had the task to make them into something new-- and something that looked nice! I completed the quilts at 2:30 am the morning of the installation-- but I'm glad I waited.. I had shirts still coming in after Christmas!

Below are the products of every one's generosity. If you're interested in one of the quilts-- they are going to be raffled off! Tickets are $2 each or 3/$5.

What is a Shrine Club?

To begin, Moslem Shriners comprise a territorial jursidiction of 11 counties. If you roughly take a pen and begin at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron and draw a somwhat diaganol line Southwest to the western edge of Branch County (i.e. Coldwater) and the border of Indiana, everything to the East is our area. As you can imagine, having our main Shrine Center in Southfield does provide somewhat a central area, however to encourage increased support from around the realm, we have established geographic Shrine Clubs all around the area.

Anywhere from Blue Water Shrine Club in Port Huron, to Downriver Shrine Club in Trenton, North Oakland Shrine Club in White Lake, to Jackson Shrine Club and Branch County Shrine Club, among others.

These clubs usually gather monthly with some type of activity, involving their ladies, to increase the groups bonds. Several holiday party throughout the year also take place. But more importantly, these clubs serve as the extenstion of the entire Shrine in their respective communities. By reaching out to the civic groups, chamber of commerce, local schools and other services, and participating in their events, the message of the Shriners are presented to those that may be unaware of our missions.

The Shrine Clubs serve a vital role in our Child Care program, whereby they raise monies for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, through many efforts such as setting up donation tables at local business during our Hospital Fund Drive, to participating in local sport events with civic organizations. The Shrine Clubs serve an important role in sponsoring new children to be cared for by our hospitals, by hosting Outreach Clinics, whereby a Shrine-affiliated physician donates his/her time to examine children to see whether they have a condition that our hospitals can treate.

In general, the annual dues to these Shrine Clubs are the least expensive from any other group you may belong, and allow you to not drive far to still participate.

Of course, there exists multiple other Shrine Clubs that are not geographic extenstions, but rather for more specific social interactions. The Shrine Golf League, which plays on the East side in Sterling Heights, consists of over 40 members. The Shrine Yacht Club, is a member of the Anchor Bay Yacht Club Association of over 50 yacht clubs with reciprocal priviledges. The Roll-N-Relix is a club for anyone owning a classic car. They will get together at various car shows, or just enjoy a night out on the town in fellowship and fun.

Some of the Shrine Clubs will also have their own special parade themes. Two of the clubs (North Oakland and Taylor) drive mini-Model-T's (referred to as Tin Lizzies), while Jackson SC has a group of members driving mini-motor bikes in local parades.

There are Shrine Clubs all over and every member should be able to find one near his home.

Hope this information provides you with some new information, which of course, any mistakes/ommissions are obviously my fault and in no way reflects the opinion of the Shrine.

Thanks for taking this opportunity to travel with me.

the 2nd Week

Well, things have quieted down a bit. We did not have a Board meeting on Monday, due to another group I belong to meeting.

On Tuesday January 19, I had the pleasure of attending the City of Sterling Heights City Council Meeting where a resolution was read and passed in appreciation of the efforts of our Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Michigan, Most Worshipful Brother Don Carman. Don lives in Sterling Heights, and if you think I am busy, for the past 7 years Don has travelled all around Michigan and the country representing the 60,000 Masons of Michigan. His term as Grand Master began last June and will continue until the end of May. One of the greatest accomplishments of Don's impressive resume, is he served as Potentate of Moslem Shriners in 1995, and he gave me the honor of being in attendance to present me with my Potentate's Jewel at the installation. I have such admiration for his character, truly a gentleman.

Wednesday January 20. I drove to Belleville, MI right after work to visit the Rawsonville Shrine Club. I was joined by the Chief Aide and Oriental Guide, along with about 12 members. A very productive meeting. One of the initiatives that was discussed, and passed was that the club will subsidizing a portion of any new member's initiation fee if he decides to commit to membership in Rawsonville Shrine Club. I am passing this information along to the other clubs, what a novel idea.

Thursday January 21, after work I spend time with my bride, how you might say. Well first we picked her car up from repairs and lo and behold end up at the Shrine Center. Carrie will be conducting her first Chairlady meeting on Saturday and I am trying to stay out of her way while she prepares. What a trooper. I think that I am going to take her for some Cold Stone Ice Cream on the way home, hmmmm, hmmm good.

Enough for now. Next post discussing what is a Shrine Club?

Circus Time. We were invited to join the Nobles of Elf Khurafeh Shriners at the Peraini Ice Arean in Flint, MI for their afternoon performance. We arrived for breakfast and after good conversations, were escorted to center stage and announced. If you have never been able to be on the ground floor of a circus, I cannot tell you how fun and exciting. You are grasped in this invisible force of fun and entertainment, what an experience.

Saturday Jan. 16, 2010

Now for the Worst Part of this Job: Attending funerals of our deceased members. Yes, being a member of the greatest fraternity of Freemasons, we are taught that life does not end with death, but continues on the path of light, however, when we lose as many members as we have in the past month, it takes it toll.

I attended the funeral for a good friend who was an active member of my Masonic Lodge and the Shrine for many years.

The rest of the day I spent with Carrie and was very happy to be home for a change.

Friday Jan. 15, 2010

Day off from work to attend the Annual Boulevard Shrine Club Divan Roast.

Every year the Boulevard Shrine Club (which meets every Friday at the Shrine Center for lunch) conducts a roast of the new Divan.

This year was no different, with Noble Frank Barrus in the roll of the Roaster, having much fun at our expense. There was also abover average monetary contributions to our Shrine Hospitals, wonderful lunch.

During the evening, Carrie and I, joined by the entire Divan and their ladies joined the Moslem Shrine Yacht Club for their annual Steak Out, at DeCarlo's Banquet Hall in Warren. I would estimate about 150 people in attendance, with great food, fun entertainment (I kissed a ventriloquist's dummy and that is all I will say), and a substantial contribution made to the Shrine Hospitals for Children.

Very nice evening, I was tired, went home and crashed.

Thursday Jan. 14, 2010

After work, went to Southfield to meet with my Circus Committee, and a representative from a prospective location for this year's Shrine Circus. We had a very informative meeting, and there exists the opportunity for a Circus. As many of you aware, the Shrine has been the oldest tenant of the Michigan State Fairgrounds, conducting ciruses since the early 1920's. Unfortunately due to state wide financial cutbacks last year, the State Fairgrounds were effectively shutdown and the gates padlocked. Of course, if we want to continue the Shrine Circus we have to relocate, not the easiest of prospects.

A Little Known Fact: The very first Shrine Circus was held by Moslem Shriners in Detroit in the early 1900's. After many successful years, Shrine Centers around the country and Canada began their versions, all modeled from our circus.

Wednesday Jan. 12, 2010

Back to Work, after a couple days off. I am so very fortunate to work for an incredible health care facility in metro-Detroit. I have a wonderful job, with wonderful hours, that allow me to direct much efforts into the Shrine. One of my biggest challenges this year is to prove to the membership, that a Noble can be an effective leader and still be employed. For the first time in five years, our Board of Directors consists of more employed members than retired (4 to 3). I feel it is imperative to allow members the opportunity to provide leadership, if they are still employed.

Anyway, after work, I go home, change, and visit one of our Senior Nobles, Ray Hillmer and and his lady Jeanne, in Dearborn (about 30 miles from home). Following a very nice visit, I attend the first meeting of the Taylor Shrine Club (about 45 miles from home). There were about 15 Nobles in attendance, and Noble Marty Sheedy took over as President. What a wonderful story Noble Marty Sheedy has turned out to be, more on him in the future, suffice it to say the Imperial Potentate created a special category of appointments, "The Imperial Ambassador" and Noble Marty was the very first appointment.

Home by 10:00 P.M.

Tuesday Jan. 12

The business day begins with a 10:00 AM meeting at the Shrine Center with my Chairman of the Imperial Convention, which will take place in Toronto the first week of July. We are preparing an event in February to give information to the membership regarding hotel and transportation costs. We have secured a beautiful hospitality room at the top of the Sheraton Centre, and are looking forward to the trip.

11:30 lunch appointment with the new President of the Highlanders, our world-famous bagpipe and drum band. The new President, who happens to be new to the Shrine, is in charge of the daily activities of the Band and we had a pleasant conversation about Shrinedom in general, and the direction he would like to see the band be directed.

5:00 P.M. The First Financial Advisory Committee of the year. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at the Shrine Center, to review all the bills and accounts, financial situation of the Temple and Child Care, and ensure the budget is on track. The Board of Directors (Divan) has been mandated by the Imperial Council to be directly in charge of every financial transaction of the Shrine, including investments, possible revenue and all expenses. We accomplish this with advice given by the elected Financial Advisory Committee (3 Nobles), of which there currently is a vacancy. It is up to me to find a Noble to occupy a vacated position for the remainder of the year.

7:00 P.M. Unit Directors Meeting. The Shrine consists of 19 Units, the majority of which are our famous parade units (i.e. Lancers, Highlanders, Motor Corps, Americans, etc). Each Unit is lead by a Director that was appointed by me for the year. I also appointed a Director of Units, who throughout the year, conducts meetings to disseminate information to all the Units. This meeting went very well, with a lot of discussion on the years events.

Early evening, I am home by 10:30 P.M.

Monday, January 18, 2010

8 days down, 357 to go.

It's the wife, reporting from the sidelines! Michael has allowed me to "guest blog"-- I hope that privilege isn't revoked!

I agree with Michael, the question I'm most asked (besides "Are you ready for this??") is how do you do it? That's simple-- we lean on each other & pick the out the "MOST" important things to get done every single day.

Things are running like normal here-- the house is a bit of a wreck, there is laundry to be done, I have had the majority of my conversations with Michael on the phone or via email. It makes me wonder how previous First Ladies communicated with their husbands in the pre-cell phone & email days. We could go days without talking if it were not for modern technology!

Hopefully, this blog will give a window to the life of a 30-something couple trying to balance work, the Shrine, family, friends, life, love, & happiness.

Before I go, I just wanted to thank everyone who came out in support of the Shrine and the new Board of Directors on Sunday! We were touched by each and everyone who attended!

The First Day

Well,
The first week is complete, I am writing this post, just prior to Carrie and I leaving to attend the Shrine Circus in Flint, MI, under the auspices of Elf Khurafeh Shriners. The state of Michigan is divided into four Shrine Centers, of which we have jurisdiction over the 11 counties of SE Michigan. Elf Khurafeh (based in Saginaw) is North of us and East of I-75 up to the Mackinaw Bridge. Saladin (Grand Rapids) holds jurisdiction to the West of the lowere peninsula, and Ahmad Shriners hold jurisdiction to the Upper Pennisula.

A recap of my first week:

Monday January 12 - 5:00 A.M.: I arrived at our downtown garage at 5:30 AM to welcome the volunteers drivers of our Child Care program who were getting ready to take our bus to Chicago. These drivers are the backbone of our Child Care program, I was able to meet with two drivers preparing to take our beautiful coach bus to the Chicago Hospital. Their projected return to the garage, 9:00 P.M., that is a 15 hour day. What do they get out of it? Pure and Simple, the joy within their hearts that they are helping in a specific manner our children we treat at the Shriners Hospitals for Children (Much, Much more on Child Care throughout the year)

Monday January 12 - 11:00 A.M.: After breakfast and a short nap, I arrived at the Shrine Center, which is about 20 miles from my house. This is the first day of business and our first Board of Directors meeting begins at 12:00 P.M.

A Tangent on Shine Leadership:

Each Shrine Center consists of a leadership group, commonly referred to as the DIVAN (ancient middle eastern theme from the beginnings of the Shrine in the late 1800's). In actuality the Divan is the Board of Directors, comprised of the Potentate (CEO), and between 6 - 10 Board of Directors, depending on the local Shrine Center by laws. The Moslem Shriners Board of Directors are comprised of 7 members, which include a Treasurer (CFO), and a Recorder (Secretary).

The other Offices in descending order from Senior to Junior are:

Chief Rabban (i.e. Vice President)
Assistant Rabban
High Priest and Prophet
Oriental Guide (most Junior member)

Each year, on the second Monday of December, the Shrine elects officers for the ensuing year. Although it is customarily a "moving line", whereby once elected to the office of Oriental Guide, you tend to automatically advance to the office of Potentate (5 year total commitment).

Back to business:

First Board of Directors meeting went very well, our new Oriental Guide provided food and refreshment. We ended about 2:30 P.M.

I met with my General Chairman, who is the greatest support system a Potentate can have, and I am truly lucky to have a tremendously talented individual.

My bride, Carrie, stopped by and began decorating the Potentate's Office. It took her several hours, but I cannot believe that she was able to transform the office into something akin to my inner thoughts, decorated by visions of Maize and Blue, along with Shrine memorabilia, photos, certificates, some baseball memorabilia, and my personal humidor. Carrie hates my smoking cigars, but as a surprise, she began preparing my humidor prior to Thanksgiving to get it seasoned and ready to go. You will continually read how incredible Carrie is, and I will not stop repeating those words.

Well, the next task was conducting the Annual Business Meeting of the Shrine, beginning at 7:00 P.M. We tried something new this year, the Chairman of Shrine Hospitality, Hungry 5 and Aides, set up food and beverages at 5:30 P.M. for Shriners in the Banquet Center for Nobles to come and eat prior to the meeting. Lo and Behold, what an incredible success, for almost 3 hours after the meeting there were still dozens of Nobles at the tables, talking, socializing, and more importantly enjoying their time in their Shrine Center. Our Assistant Rabban came up with this idea, and I am running with it, in order to promote the Social aspect of the Shrine.

The business meeting went very well, short and to the point. Afterwards I enjoyed th ecompany of many Shriners for the remainder of the evening. You will also hear me repeatedly say, How I Love the Shrine.

Until Tuesday Morning

Sunday January 10, 2010 - A New Beginning

The Shriners conducted a public installation of the Divan (Board of Directors) for only the 2nd time. I was honored to be installed, along with the other members of the BoD in the presence of approximately 300 guests. What an incredible day. My Lovely and Talented Bride, Carrie, who I will repeatedly refer to as my beacon this year, radiated the beauty and confidence that I adore about her, and my heart was saturated with the affections of my family and friends in attendance.

The food and beverage service were fantastic, all of which were performed by the greatest group of volunteers in the world, SHRINERS. We have a dedicated group of Shriners referred to as "The Hungry Five", who without fail, can put on a great meal for any amount of people. The service was impeccable.

The other chief volunteers, comprised of the appointed Potenatate's Aides, provided Carrie and myself with a day that we will never forget.

We have proven that this event is a vital beginning to each year, and I hope that it continues to improve and have more people in attendance. The pomp and circumstance, and foramality of the event is exactly how we should perceive ourselves as Shriners. We should strive to this level at all times. I was so proud to see the Nobles in the audience don their Fezzes, the emblem of the Shriner, what a proud day to be a Shriners.

Carrie and I arrived at around 10 AM, and when we left at 8:30 PM the party was still going on. It was a great start to a new beginning.

1st Week - WOW!!!!!!

Wow, that is all I can say. One week into the official 2010 Shrine Year. I do not know how to describe the thrill, excitement and awe I have felt this entire week. However, I am going to try, that is the reason for this Blog.

The most repetitive questions I have been asked in the last 4 years tend to inquire about how does it feel to be on the Divan (Board of Directors), how much time is involved, what is the financial burden on the Board members, how can I do it and work for a living, and many other similar topics.

Although we have multiple modes of communicating information to our members, which have increased by volumes the last several years, I look forward to this blog, which will by my first hand account throughout the next 12 months.

My goal, by keeping a "personal" journal, is to share, with the Nobility, the information that does not receive usual attention. I am devoted to maintaining this blog continuously, no matter where I find myself and to also relay general information about the Shriners, whether it is the Fraternal or Philanthropy.

I am looking for this blog to be another step for me to the path of continuing light, and will allow me to better understand and provide a review of this year.

I hope you enjoy this trip, as I will, I am looking forward to the ensuing year, including several new ideas, updating annual traditions, and always providing the top quality of care to our children at the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Enjoy the Ride
