The last day of September, is everybody ready for the holiday? I know this is a somewhat sad time in the Shrine, because our Snowbirds are getting ready to leave in the next couple of weeks, and we will not see them until late April/May. I cannot blame them, I would get out if had the opportunity, avoiding the cold/snow.
Anyway, last night was the Annual Potentate's Birthday Party (Official). The event was coordinated by the Chief Rabban and the 2011 General Chairman. We feasted on stuffed cornish game hens and homemade oatmeal raisin/peanut butter cookies, hmmmmmmmmm!!!!!! Oh yeah, the platters of delicious hummous as appetizers were great.
Without going into too much detail, I am in awe over the support the nobility has shown not only for this years Board of Directors, but also the Shrine in General. I was incredibly honored by the gifts, and I am so touched deep in my heart, soul and mind. If ever I needed a reminder of how I love this organization, it came last night with the outpouring of Shrine Brotherly Love. I cannot thank this group of fine Men, we are a family of Brethren. I cherish my relationship with all of them.
After being entertained by a dummy, the second time I have kissed this thing by the way this year, I know I must be crazy, I left around 9:30 to get home a little early. I was at the Shrine Center every day this week, and wanted a little break.
Thursday Sept. 30: Well the break did not last too long, I actually had to go to the Shrine Center this morning at 7:00 A.M. to take care of some Board business. I only had to stay around 30 minutes or so and got into work around 8:30 this morning. I think my quota for the week is filled, however, we will be back this Saturday evening for the Poker Progressive Social Party of the Year.
I will hope to see many new faces around the Shrine Center on Saturday.

Wednesday September 29, 2010
Very busy last couple of days.
Monday 9-27-10: Was at the Shrine Center for a Board of Director's Meeting and then drover out to Farmington to celebrate the Fall Kick-Off of the Director's Staff. We had a very good BoD meeting and the D-Staff event probably had around 60 members.
Tuesday 9-28-10: I arrived at the Shrine Center at 4:30 to take take care of the bills/accounts during the Financial Advisory Committe Meeting, followed by a brief Board of Director's Meeting. Then, the Shrine Center had three simulataneous events: The Shriners Annual Golf League Banquet, the Scottish Rite Awards Banquet and our usual customer on Tuesday evenings (600 people). The commercial staff really earned their money this evening, but it seemed very well organized and I was happy at the overall performance.
I also had a Unit Directors Meeting at 7:00 P.M., along with our Highlanders and Brass Band Unit meetings. I would not be surprised if we came close to 1000 people in the building last night. This type of evening really brought home the rewards of all our hard work. We have a home that is successful commercially and fraternally. Of course we are not at the ulitmate goal of being a central point for all Shriners, but we are getting closer with every plan the Board of Directors enact. I cannot begin to extend my gratitude with the Board Members, especially the ones the Shrine have elected to be their future Potentates, the vision is clearer than ever and we are now at a point to reach our goals.
Wednesday: After work I am once again going to the Shrine Center to attend the Annual Potentate's Birthday Party. This is an event that the Chief Rabban organizes, and celebrates (roasts) the Potentate. Yes, I know I have been taking a lot of ribbing for this being the 73rd birthday party this year, oh well, I will roll with the punches. I am sure I will hear many comments this evening. I am actually looking forward to attending a Shrine Event that I have no contribution but to show up and enjoy.
We are also getting ready for the Poker Progressive Social Party on Saturday. Basically everything is in place, and the fun is ready to begin. Prior to that I will be celebrating the birth of my beautiful and talented bride, who has endured over 6 years of marriage to this bloggin' pote. Remember, remember, remember, I will whisper some good counsel in your ear: "A HAPPY WIFE IS A HAPPY LIFE"

Summary of last 5 days in 3 words: Shriners Having Fun!!!!!!
27 Nobles of Moslem Shriners attended the 2010 Annual Convention of the Great Lakes Shrine Association in Rockford, IL (Tebala Shriners). We enjoyed the company of many Nobles from around the midwest and witnessed some very good competitions. I never had the opportunity to watch the Motor Corps compete and they are a sight to see when all those bikes are performing intricate maneuvers in tight formations. I also had the opportunity to watch some of the Clown Competition. I have to tell you the pride in all these Nobles are obvious in the manner in which they carry themselves during competition.
On Saturday, we were involved in the Parade in downtown Rockford, which crossed the bridge of the East River (Very Cool). Our own Americans took part in the parade and made sure that all those on the sidelines were entertained. About 10 of us walked the parade in mid-60's cool and dry weather, and we also had our Shrine Coach in the parade. It was a very nice day, had the opportunity to see a lot of unique units from different Shrine Centers.
We had the opportunity to entertain many Nobles and their ladies in our hospitality suite during the weekend. They were all impressed by the commradery they witnessed within our group. I want you to know that many members of other Shrine Temple Board of Directors came up to me and could not believe that we had the vast majority of our Board of Directors in unison, honestly talking among themselves, and generally agreeing in the direction of their Shrine Center. I knew we had something special in the composition of the majority of the Board Members of our Shrine Center, but it became evident that unfortunately, it is not the norm around Shrinedom. Our Nobility has done a pretty good job in electing effective future Potentates that can best work and best agree.
We did not get back to enjoy the Clinton Parade, but received many good reports about the turnout and participation of our Units, once again making us the center of their parade and showing off the pride of Moslem Shriners.
This week is busy, busy, busy. I have a Board Meeting this evening, followed by the Director Staff Kick Off Dinner. Tuesday, I have a Financial Advisory Committee Meeting, followed by a Unit Directors Meeting and also the annual Scottish Rite Awards Banquet. Wednesday is the Annual Potentate's Birthday Party (yes this is the only official sanctioned party, not number 3, 4 or 5). I am getting razzed by so many Nobles, but all in good fun.
Of course, everything leads up to the 2nd Poker Progressive Run Social Party on Saturday evening at the Shrine Center. Carrie and I are very optimistic that this will have more people in attendance than in February, GOOD TIMES!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tuesday September 21
The Supreme Architect was definitely providing light yesterday. The First Annual Shriners Hospitals for Children Charity Golf Outing was held at the TPC - Dearborn. We had 77 golfers on a beautiful day of sun and 70. The Assistant Rabban and myself camped out at the 12th hole the entire day assisting in closest to the pin. I cannot begin to tell you how much fun the participants had, the vast majority of which have never golfed the TPC.
The staff at the TPC were wonderful and very, very helpful. I really believe and am convinced that this event will turn into one of our largest fundraisers for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Thank you to all the Nobles who assisted in the background. Although I am not a golfer, I have to say this course was beautiful. The 12th hole was playing at around 122 yards with a large pond in front of the hole, surrounded by large trees. Just plain pretty.
Well the rest of the week is loaded, what else is new. I have meeting this evening with the entire team for the annual Shriners Holiday (All Units) Party, to lay out the framework for a successful event. Then we leave on Thursday morning to attend the Annual Convention of the Great Lakes Shrine Association in Rockford, IL, which will be a stag event this year.
Here's to a wonderful week.

TGIF
It has been a very good week. Wednesday evening I attended a dinner held by my Masonic Lodge, Jefferson Lodge No. 553 F. & A. M., which honored a member of their lodge being Potentate of Moslem Shriners. I was awed by the number of friends/family that attended. For those of you who are not aware Jefferson Lodge is one of the mos appendant body-friendly lodges in Michigan. We are proud that many of our Brothers not only serve their blue lodge with loyalty, but also seek further light in all our appendant bodies: Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shrine, Eastern Star, etc. We have had many members serve as presiding officers of not only the local appendant body chapters, but also as state wide leaders. I have the honor of being the 6th Brother of Jefferson Lodge to serve as Potentate of Moslem Shriners.
When I view the accomplishments and reputations of the 5 other members who served as Potentates, I am so honored to be included in their company.
Thursday: I had to have a minor surgical procedure after work and I tried to drive to Plymouth to meet the Lovely and Talented Carrie for her Annual work gala. I travel I696 Westbound at least 3 times a week without any traffic, except for last night. It took 1 hour and 45 minutes to get from my house to Orchard Lake Road, by which time Carrie called and said I should just turn back, which was not much lighter. I got home around 8 P.M. and rested a little.
This weekend is kind of light. I am attending a Masonic Memorial Service for a Past Master of my lodge this evening. Saturday AM I a meeting some Shriners at the Downtown Garage to clean/wash the Child Care vehicles, and Sunday I have another Masonic Memorial Service for a Past Master who was one of the brothers in attendance the night I was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason.
Monday is our first Shriners Hospitals for Children Charity Golf Classic to be held at the TPC Dearborn. We are very excited about the future possibility of this event in raising monies for our hospitals. We have a full slate of golfers and plenty of Child Care information to pass out. The weather forcast is low 70's and Sunny, which to me, sounds like a very nice day to golf. Of course, I will take my place at one of the par 3 holes to assist in my own way.
Now on to one of the most important topics everyone is interesting in, how is the University of Michigan Wolverines Collegiate Football Program going to perform against UMass this week. First of all, I was told that some people do not understand the abbreviations of certain Colleges, therefore I will state that UMass is the University of Massachusetts, which are referred to as the "Minutemen".
As you know I went out on a limb earlier this year and predicted that the Wolverines will win the BCS National Championship. So far, I am pleased with my prediction. I believe that the next three games, which many may consider very light competition, will provide some breaks for Denard Robinson. I do not see him rushing more than 20 times in any of the next 3 weeks, saving his body for the real Big 10 season. If all goes according to plan, he will play about 3 quarters and then Gardiner will get some playing time. I am not too happy that Gardiner has seen limited play, I beleive that it may affect his redshirts status, however, if Rich Rod feels that he is the true backup and next starter, the next 3 games should give him some real good experience. Also, we will see what the new special team kickers will look like. I never like left footed kickers, it is too much a disadvantage in not only running a play but to also make sure the ball placement is at the correct hash mark for your kicker.
Potentate's Prediction: Woverines 24 UMass 13

Tuesday September 14
We had our 5th Business Meeting of the year last night, and only about 60 members (liberal guess) were in attendance. One of the things we changed this year in order to try to bring out more members to business meetings is to offer free food and camel's milk. Our Hungry 5 have consistently cooked delicious sausages with grilled peppers/onions/mushrooms. And up until last night, it has been a good idea where the numbers have steadily increased. It is a little disconcerting to think that the membership have 6 opportunities this year to share their thoughts on our organization, and out of 3500 members, less than 60 attend.
Oh well, besides that, the meeting went great, had some very nice presentations by the chairman of upcoming events and we are officially into the latter part of the Shrine Calendar. It begins with a couple of events in October, our Poker Progressive Social on Saturday October 2, where all the unit rooms will be opened and guests will be able to partake in some good social entertaining. The other event is our first annual Oktoberfest on Saturday October 16, which will have german camel's milk, food and music.
I have a finance meeting tonight at the shrine center, and will go visit the Highlanders, but besides that it should be a quiet evening.

We had a very busy weekend, not too much rest, but very good results.
Friday night I went out with the guys. Our circus producer was in town, to talk about the future circus, and we got together for dinner and cards.
Saturday (Get ready for all this)
1) Drove down to the Downtown garage and helped wash and clean our child care vans and bus. It is a great feeling to know that eventhough I work during the week and cannot drive our children to the Shriners Hospitals, there is something I can do to feel I am assisting in their care, albeit in a very small way.
2) The Chief Rabban, Child Care Director and myself then drove down to Temperance, MI and attended the annual meeting of the Lenawee-Monroe-Hillsdale County Association of the Order of Eastern Star. Back in June, approximately 20 members of this group travelled to the open house at our Shriners Hospitals for Children - Erie, PA. They had such a fulfilling time that they decided a portion of their annual charitable fundraising was to be directed to the Shriners Hospitals for Children. It was a pleasure to attend their luncheon, speak briefly regarding our hospital program and have a substantial contribution made to the Hospitals. This group, who happens to be about an hour and a half from the Shrine Center, living predominantly in a rural community, is a perfect example of what we can do to support our hospitals, no matter the quantity of membership, but based on the quality of our philosophy.
3) Following lunch, on the drive back to town, I was on the phone continuously, due to the a water pipe bursting/exploding at the Shrine Center, just prior to 500 + people attending an afternooon event. The entire system proved effective, in that our commercial manager, local fire department, several members of the Board of Directors (including our General Chairman) and several nobles in the plumbing industry came together in a very fast manner to solve the many problems, and minimilized what possibly could have been devastating.
4) I did get home to greatly enjoy the incredible performance of The University of Michigan Wolverines Collegiate Football Program, in beating the irish. As I am writing this post, we are now ranked #20 in the polls. Everyone is awed by the performance of our young QB, and of course he has given put up some great numbers, however, I am happy by how strong the Offensive Line performed, opening all those holes, and of course elated at the passing efficiency of Robinson. I am always optimistic over their performance, and am looking forward to battling UMass next week.
Sunday September 12, 2010: Shriners Zoo Day at the Detroit Zoo
What a great day, beautiful weather, no rain and plenty of sun to welcome dozens of our shrine patients, their parents, our members, their kids and grandkids. The all you can eat buffet was delicious and plentiful, and the games that our Child Care Director and his lovely wife arranged were great. My beloved showed another hidden talent by providing face painting services to the children. One of the funnier moments came when an official zoo employee came over to relieve Carrie of her duties, stating she was the afternoon shift. Well, it is finally a realization, Carrie's talents are really geared toward working in a zoo.
We left around 4:30 P.M., got home and caught up on the laundry. My cpap machine broke down on Saturday and I did not sleep well last night, so I am fatigued. The next 5 days are packed with several events, and I hope to get my machine operable in order for me to try to sleep again.
Talk to you soon

Short Work Week, and the weekend is about to begin, life is pretty good.
There has been a lot of Shrine work being done this week, but mostly via email and numerous phone calls, therefore I was only at the Shrine Center on Tueaday for a meeting regarding our commercial enterprise.
Preparations are under way for the Poker Progressive Social Party (Oct. 2), Oktoberfest (Oct. 16), and Fall Ceremonial (Nov. 6). We are also finalizing arrangements to attend the Great Lakes Shrine Association Convention in Rockford, IL in a couple of weeks, should be a very good trip.
Last night I attended a Masonic Memorial Service for our recently passed, most senior Past Potentate, who served our shrine center as Potentate in 1976. It was amazing to find out he has been a Master mason for 73 years, remarkable!!!! What a great turnout by the Nobility, paying the last respects we can for a departed brother.
I am looking forward to the weekend. The Chief Rabban, Child Care Director and myself will be attending a meeting of the Lenawee-Monroe-Oakland County Association of Eastern Star in Samaria, MI. They are making a contribution to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and we are looking forward to speaking to the members of an appendant body, to spread the word of Shrinedome.
Of course, the kick off of the University of Michigan Wolverines is at 3:30 P.M. The next victim of their march to the BCS National Championship will be the fightin' irish of notre dame. I love this rivalry, it is actually my favorite game on the schedule every year. I know that the majority beleive that the last game against the buckeyes is "The Game", however, I truly love UM-ND. The matchup is fantastic, the two top teams in historic wins and win percentage. I hold hope, and am of course optimistic, but you never know about going into South Bend. Go Blue!!!
Equal time to the 2 spartan fans out there: good luck with the sisters of the poor collegiate program this weekend, or whatever minor team you have padded your schedule with this week.
Sunday is going to be exciting. We are attending the Shrine Zoo Day. Many of our membership's kids/grandkids/nieces/nephews will have the opportunity to visit with our shrine patients at the Detroit Zoo, entertained by good food and company. Hopefully the rain will hold off for us to enjoy the afternoon.
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND.

Did the official end of summer really just pass us by yesterday. Can anyone believe we are in September, and we just celebrated Labor Day?
Carrie and I had a beautiful, restful weekend in Caseville, from Friday through Monday. We were able to relax, enjoy great company and sleep to the sound of waves (some of the most restfull sleep this year). We were able to enjoy the company of the future Potentates of Moslem Shriners, along with their incredible wives. The bonding was great, terrific ideas shared and I am so very proud of what will be accomplished in the future. The Shrine is in good hands, and our leadership strongest than ever. I have to tell you, the vision among your future leaders is very similiar. It is very apparent that although we each have individual egos and personal biases, the general sentiment is whatever it takes to improve our Fraternity and Philanthropy over our egos. There has not been a string of future leaders that share this common goal in a very long time, and we are so very lucky that is the new trend among the nobility. Great job in electing leaders that will benefit the shrine.
Labor Day: We left Caseville and headed to Romeo for the Annual Peach Festival Parade. It was a little overcast and cooler than normal, however, the parade, as always, was well attended and fun. The afterglow was held at a local shriners residence of over 50 acres of land, with great hospitality, hay rides, and of course fantastic food prepared by our own Hungry 5. I do not know whether they have ever been asked to perform more events in one year than 2010, but let me tell you they not only have never disappointed the shrine, they have been incredibly successful during each endevour. What a great dedicated group of Nobles!!!!!!!!
Back to business, we are preparing for a busy couple of months and preparations/meetings begin in earnest this afternoon. My schedule becomes very congested (as if there were huge gaps of inactivity in the past). However, our goal form the onset was to provide social events at least monthly for our membership, and let them decide which ones to attend.
By the way, this weekend was topped off by a great opening day victory by the University of Michigan Wolverines. What a great game, against a pretty good UConn team, I think we chased those Huskies back to the Basketball Court. Anyway, I am very happy at the early performance, and cannot wait to see the Wolverines step onto the field in South Bend this weekend and continue the tradition of Michigan/Notre Dame. I look forward to this game every year, and although neither of us our currently ranked, it usually is a great game.

Thursday September 2, 2010
Last night marked one of the proudest of me being on the Board of Directors when we conducted the first Unit Veterans Celebration in almost 10 years. When you join a Unit of Moslem Shriners (i.e. Motor Corps, Americans, Highlanders, etc) and dedicate 15 years of active service, your Unit can bestow upon you the honor of being a Unit Veteran.
When I first joined the Shrine, 10 years ago, I was told of the very active Unit Veterans group that would come together annually for events. Like a lot of things, due to lack of leadership, participation, older membership, this event ceased to exist. It was my intention when I was elected to try to revive this celebration. I started last year by going to every unit and asking for a roster of their members, which the main database did not contain. I asked for the units to designate the veterans. At the beginning of this year the Chairman of the Unit Veterans Party spent many, many days compiling the lists. The culmination was last night's event. 135 Unit Veterans, many who have never been to the Shrine Center, showed up to an incredible meal beginning with tiger shrimp, hummous, and coconut chicken skewers, then the entree of lamb chops and salmon. I had no room for the warm apple dumplings for dessert (I am salivating thinking of this monster meal).
The program began by introducing the Directors of each Unit who then presented each Veteran of their respective unit with a specially designed jewel, that was created for Moslem by our Chief Photographer, boy does he have talent. Each Unit was then gathered into the foyer for group shots that hopefully will be published in the near future.
Let me tell you I had a ball and felt so good on my way home.
That will do it for my Shrine time until Monday. I have family in town from California that I will be spending the next day with, then a little R&R until Monday. We will be parading at the Romeo Peach Festival on Labor Day, one of the largest parades of the season.
Have a great weekend!!!!!!!!
