3 Days, over 600 miles driving; I'm tired.
Last night, I picked up Carrie in Ann Arbor and drove to Coldwater to attend the annual Fish Fry of Branch County Shrine Club. Branch County SC is our farthest west SC in our jurisdiction. They have a wonderful fish fry at the farm of one our neighbors. During dinner their neighbhoring Amish family arrives on a horse and buggy delivering fresh, homemade chocolate and strawberry ice cream, hmmmmmmmm.
Of course, I did not get home until 11:30 PM, and went to work today.
Recap of the weekend: Saturday August 15. Carrie made desserts for 5 million, or what seemed like 5 million, they were delicious and we enjoyed them after a wonderful bbq at the Director's Staff Annual Picnic. We were once again on Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township, and enjoyed the company of over 70 members and their ladies. Although it was very hot and humid, we had a ball. We didn't get home until 9:30, and we were tired.
Sunday: Carrie, once again the consummate baker, made 100 cupcakes (can anyone say bumpy cake cupcakes, hmmmmmmmmmmmmm). We went back to Commerce Township, this time to a golf course to volunteer at a charity event to fight Breast Cancer. We basically manned the "Vegas Hole" all day. It was real fun and we did win a nice silent auction item. We did not get home until 10:00 P.M. Tired.
Today (I am all over the place in this post, sorry). I am at the Shrine Center taking care of some mail and let the Highlanders in for their weekly practice. I am going home and spending the evening with my wife. You may think that after spending 600 miles in a care with her over a 3 day period that we are sick of each other, but believe it or don't, I enjoy her company, she is a pretty cool dame, and I basically am in love with her, who wouldn't be with all her talents and especially putting up with me and the last 5 years.
See you later

End of July, so Fast
This has been a very busy week. I was at the Shrine Center on Sunday (picnic), Monday (Board Meeting), and Tuesday (Finance and landscaping meeting). Wednesday, I stayed home and cooked Carrie dinner (Yeah, I am a good husband, go ahead you can agree).
Thursday, I drove our Co-Chairman for the 1st Annual Shriners Hospital for Children Golf Classic to the TPC-Dearborn for a final meeting. We met the other Co-Chairman and with our new Child Care Director and other supporting Nobles, finalized the details of the Charity Golf Outing, which will be on Monday September 20.
I cannot believe that this is coming together. 3 years ago I was approached with the idea of elevating our local child care golf outing to an event that would potentially make hundreds of thousands for the Shrine Hospitals for Children. I did not even imagine that we could create a program involving one of the elite courses in Michigan, the TPC in Dearborn. When I agreed that was the last I needed to do, these wonderful chairman arranged all the details and this is going to be the first of what will eventually become a stand alone charity golf outing in metroDetroit. That is how confident I am of this event. I envision a few years down the road The Shriners Hospitals for Children Charity Golf Outing at the TPC to rival the behemoths of charity outings (i.e. Ted Lindsay's, Detroit Lions, etc). What a wonderful cause this event will be raising money, the greatest philanthropy in the world. I know that there are many who are disappointed to see the past version replaced, however, I view it as a new path to the financial security of our beloved hospitals. If only I desired to golf, it would be the most fantastic event ever. Oh well, I will be there to assist where required.
Friday, I am down at the Shrine Center rearranging the office furniture in the Pote's office. We purchased new desks, etc for three of the offices to replace the 1970 themed furniture (yeah Retro is not my thing).
I am also assisting our Sportsman's Raffle chairman with numbering of the fantastic door prizes that we purchased last weekend. You know, Life is Good!!!!!!!!!
I will be out of here shortly to begin a nice weekend with the Lovely and Talented Carrie. Tomorrow evening we are going to a very nice restaurant and a movie, and hopefully, weather permitting, do some yard work.
Have a wonderful Weekend.

Wow, Wow, Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! For anyone interested in whether the Shrine is an organization on the decline, then you definetly were not in attendance for the Annual Shriners Family Picnic, Sunday afternoon. 400+ Nobles, Ladies, children, grand-children, family and friends enjoyed beautiful sunny weather, great food and refreshments, various children activities and fellowship.
We estimated between 225 and 250 people, based on the previous several years, and we were pleasantly surprised to see everyone show up for great times.
I sat back and watched so many newer nobles from the Spring Ceremonial interact with Shrine veterans and vice versa. I loved seeing so many kids with smiles on their faces as they tried to kick their shoes the farthest, not break water balloons, or slide down that enormous air slide.
I keep repeating myself, but it is true, the Shrine is alive and well.
Carrie and left around 6:30 P.M. and there were still people sitting outside enjoying themselves. It is truly great to be a Shriner.
By the way, I forgot to mention that on Saturday morning, I met our Sportsman's Raffle Chairman at 9:00 A.M. at Gander Mountain and we went on a shopping spree for door prizes that will be offered during the fundraiser. We had fun scouring all the areas and picking items we felt those in attendance would appreciate. It was almost a type of kid in a candy store type moment.
This week proves to continue to be busy including a Board meeting this afternoon, finance meeting Tuesday, a couple of meetings on Wednesday. I was supposed to go out of town this weekend, but plans changed, therefore Carrie and I will actually have our first free weekend since late April. We are contemplating where to go, or waht to do. On one hand we could sit at home, a well deserving reward, and do nothing, or keep our busy pace and get away over the weekend. We will see.

Moslem Shriners Annual Family Picnic
It is about 9AM on Sunday Morning and Carrie and I getting ready to attend the Annual Family picnic. The weather reports are looking good for a comfortable day, our Picnic Chairman and his wife have worked real hard to put on a great day, and we are looking forward to spending time with family and friends.
Just a little tease before I post something following the event.
Hope to see you at the Picnic.

Wednesday July 21
I have received many emails from Nobles asking whether I have given up on blogging, due to my sporadic nature of posting messages. Unfortunately, although I would love to blog everyday, sometimes it seems there is never enough hours in a day.
Monday July 19: I got to the Shrine Center around 4:30 P.M. and immediately left with the Asst. Rabban to go furniture shopping. Anyone who has been in any of the Board of Directors offices have seen the ancient furniture, desks, chairs, etc. They are old, in poor condition and not conducive to running a business. We have found a company dealing in pre-owned (I Love that word, so much better than "used") office furniture. We found many newer chairs and desks to provide a more business like nature to the offices.
We returned to the Shrine Center in time to initiate a new Noble to Moslem Shriners, via a short form ritual. He was very happy to have been afforded this courtesy and promised to return for the Fall Ceremonial.
I then met with some visitors to give them a tour of the building and new technological upgrades that have occurred this year. They were really impressed and hopefully a future relationship may have been initiated.
Following this meeting, I was on the run the rest of the evening. Mondays are Shrine night, and the during the summer, the third Monday have multiple units meeting. As we run this Shrine as a business, the Board of Directors cannot afford to take a summer vacation. Therefore, the Board members are continuously busy with different projects. I am amazed how well the Directors of the Board have empowered themselves to take a vital role in the management of the Shrine. Until last year, as you were elected to the Board, you sat around for four years and let the Potentate run the the entire show to his pleasure. It is refreshing to see this change, to utilize the talents of the Board members that were elected to represent our organization.
Tuesday July 20: I left work and drove down to the Masonic Temple in Detroit. It was such a shame to see the number of indigent, riff-Raff sitting on the steps around the building. This scenario would never have been tolerated in the hey-day of the Masonic Temple. I met with some officials regarding the parking situation around the temple and attempted to arrange an understanding as to the future of the area. Like I tell everyone, no one will ever, EVER, state that the Masonic Temple in Detroit is not the most beautiful building in the world. A very brief tour of the building will amaze anyone, and to know more intimate details as many members know over the years.
I left there about 6:15 P.M. and drover for over an hour to Ray Township, and visited Utica-Macomb Lodge for their annual Steak Dinner and Smoke out. I enjoyed a very healthy stogie with some Brothers I have not seen in a while, sitting outside in the beautiful evening. It was very pleasant sitting around in a Lodge setting, without any titles and enjoying the company of Brothers, is that not what Brotherly Love is all about.
Have I told you how much I love being a Mason, I cannot imagine my life without living by the tenets.
On another note, I had to make another tough decision at the shrine regarding leadership of one of our largest enterprises. These decisions are never easy, but that is part of the responsibility of leadership. We would like to think ourselves infallible to chosing the best and most talented members to lead our several units/clubs, looking at past mistakes and seeking better results. Unfortunately, a year is a long time and many things occur to alter the future. However, I am so happy to have been able to appoint a great newer Noble to a very important position, a position I believe that he is not only ready to serve but to excell and bring about an improved future. I do beleive that the future of the Shrine is in good hands with members as this Noble. May the Supreme Architect bless us all and continue to provide further light.

Sunday July 18, 2010
Saturday was indeed an early and long day, however, a beautiful day.
Carrie and I left home around 8 A.M. to attend the Farmington Founders Parade. This is the first time in over 10 years that the entire compliment of Shrine Units have performed in the Farmington Parade, what a success. As I was walking the parade the continuous applause and comments thanking the Shriners for returning to the parade was constant. There is nothing that makes one feel more proud of the institution they are a member as when the general public thanks your group. It is a great feeling of joy and pride.
Following the parade we conducted an afterglow at the local Elks Lodge, hot dogs and camel's milk and the use of the building. I met with the Exhalted Ruler and she was very cordial and welcoming of all our Shriners and Ladies. Although I do not belong to the Elks, I have visited many of their lodges and they are a great group of people, who are also very proud of their group.
Carrie and I did not stay too long, we drove up to my General Chairman's house and then eventually arrived at The Quake on the Lake Hyrdoplane races, where we the Shriners had a booth for our organizations. One word "Hot", even by the water. There were quite a few people enjoying the festivities and we stayed a couple of hours.
We went back to the GC's house and were invited on his pontoon boat to ride around the lake he lives on. It was a very nice relaxing trip, after a long night. One cool thing is he lives on the lake that they film the HBO show "Hung" and we saw the house that they film some of the show.
We got home around 9:00 P.M. tried to watch some tv and gave up around 10P.M. when we were both dozing off.
Today, Sunday, we are cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, and possibly visiting my nephews and nieces, who probably do not remember me.
We will see if the thunderstorms head south and we are spared, although the lawn really needs the water.

Friday July 16, 2010
We survived the storms on Thursday evening without any damage or loss of power, which is unusual in our neighborhood. Carrie and I had to cancel our meeting to discuss our Children's Zoo Picnic in September, but will probably meet with the team next week. We are both excited about this event as it brings something we wanted to accomplish from day one to the forefront: have more social functions for our children and grandchildren, making the Shrine a more family-oriented organization.
Friday: I attended the Steak Out for the Yacht Club annual picnic, which is a two day affair, however the Saturday is usually very Shrine-busy and I usually attend the Friday festivities. I beleive there were more boats docked this year than in previous years and we had a lot of fun going boat to boat talking to the Shriners and their ladies. I met some newer Masons and non-Masons who are beginning their journeys in our fraternity and that is always good news. The weather was beautiful and the cool breeze off the lake was perfect. I was joined by our Chief Rabban, Treasurer, Past Pote and his lady for a very good steak dinner. I left around 8:30 so I can get home and see Carrie. Saturday is going to be a very early and long day and wanted to make sure I was well rested.

Tuesday July 13, 2010
Back to work. I spent Monday evening at the Shrine Center with a 2 1/2 hour presentation on our commercial enterprise. We are ecstatic over the long term planning for our commercial building, we have great people who are dedicated to its success.
We also had a preliminary meeting for the Sportsman's Raffle, which I was not able to attend but spoke to several Nobles afterward with some positive comments on the upcoming fundraiser.
I got home around 10:30 P.M., and since Carrie is up north for work, went to sleep with a very, very, active kitty named Mays.
Tuesday: I just finished the Financial Advisory Committee meeting and then had a brief meeting to discuss the Annual Ceremonial of the Great Lakes Shrine Association. This event will be held in Rockford, IL at the end of September and we are attempting to offer the Units the information to see whether they want to attend and compete.
The Highlanders are meeting, and I believe getting ready for the Farmington parade this weekend.
I am heading home around 7:30 to watch the beginning of the All Star Game (Go American League). I am bummed over the surge the White Sox have had in the last month, disappointed that they are in first place. The Tigers are going to have to come out fighting for the rest of the season. If they have the determination, this should be a division race worthy of some of the greater fights in recent years. I am ready, Go Tigers.

Toronto - Day 4
A lot of us attended the pageant of the newly installed Imperial Potentate, Imp. Sir George Mitchell. It was an extravagant affair.
Carrie and I finally were able to take some time and visit Casa Loma, which was built in the early 1900's by a local millionaire, who was able to live in the castle for less than 15 years prior to losing his entire fortune.
The History Channel was on the grounds filming scenes for an upcoming miniseries about The Kennedy's (starring Greg Kinear and Katie Holmes). It was very cool seeing the actors dressed in early 1900's clothes. They actually had the genuine 1924 v-16 Cadillac that Joe Kennedy had custom ordered and shipped to England. A local car enthusiast had the car in his collection for many years and allowed the movie to use the vehicle. What a beauty.
The Castle was gorgeous with its underground tunnels, incredible gardens and even an unfinished indoor pool, that looks eerily familiar to the one at the Masonic Temple in Detroit (both ran out of money prior to finishing the pools).
After all that walking and returning to the hotel, we both chilled for a while, I actually got a leg massage from the spa to rejuvenate my soaring legs (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!).
In the evening, there was a large group who had previously made plans to attend The Jersey Boys and they departed around 5 P.M. Carrie and I purchased tickets to the Blue Jays/Minnesota Twins game and left to attend. The Rogers Centre is about 2 miles from the hotel and a decent ballpark. The attendance was less than 15000 people, and we had great seats behind home plate. Of course we were rooting against the Twins, and they ended up losing to the Jays, and the Tigers beat the Orioles, so we are 1 1/2 games in the lead this morning.
Did I mention that we saw an inside the park home run by Jose Bautista, it was great. This is the 2nd time I witnessed the feat and both times have been outside of Detroit. The first time was Dave Hulse of the Milwaukee Brewers against the NY Yankees at the old Yankee Stadium. So I at least got that to add to my list of baseball achievements.
We returned to the hotel to find many of our guests coming back from their many ventures, all in good spirits and all appearing to have had a great time. I turned in early, since I knew I was driving back to Detroit today.
Thursday: Attend the final portion of the Convention, taking care of a few pieces of legislation, checking out of the hotels, packing/loading and Departing. However, the final piece for many of us will be a stop between Toronto and London at a small castle that has been transformed into a restaurant, for a lite dinner. Then back home.
I was talking to Carrie last night about her thoughts, and both her and I are elated over the outcome. We had three dedicated Nobles who worked very hard to ensure a great hospitality room, including the truly Best Chief Aide any Potentate could ever be blessed with having on board. I had many of our guests share their thanks for the great week and for all the information and efforts that were done to make their lives as easy as possible. I truly believe that we have shown all the other Temples who visited how gracious and how proud we are to be part of Moslem Shriners.
As we prepare to depart this beautiful city of Toronto and look back at all the preparations, which began in March 2007 with our first site visit, I am so proud of all our Shriners, and am very happy for the results. I look forward to Carrie and I attending next year's Convention, which will be held in Denver, Colorado. I know that the Imp. Council Team are working very hard to make it even a better success, which they will have no problem in accomplishing.

Toronto - Day 3
Tuesday morning
Around 20 of our Nobles began the morning walking up the parade route to the staging grounds for the Imperial Parade. On the way over the Queen's motorcade passed right by and her majesty waved to us, probably wonndering who the people were with the funny red hats. All the parade units and participants gathered a very nice shaded park called Queen's Park and socialized for a couple of hours. We were within a 100 feet of 5 huge howitzer artillery guns that were being manned by the Canadian military, and when the Queen was leaving, they gave her a 21 gun salute. If you have never witnessed one of these guns fire, it was amazing. I was very impressed by the regimental nature of the soldiers manning the guns and ammunition. The sound and smoke after each individual shot was a sight to see.
On to the parade, it is traditional the "home" Shrine Temple kicks off the parade. Boy, did they kick off the parade, Rameses Shriners (Toronto) had what appeared to be a never ending line up of parade units, it was actually a full hour until the rest of the temples kicked off. When we finally stepped off, it was truly inspiring to see all the people on University avenue and walking down a street lined by sky scrapers. We had our banner leading us and placed our Imperial Ambassador in the middle of our contingency. He received more applause than anyone, he is very well known, ha, ha.
Near the end of the parade, our Highlanders joined us after marching en masse with a large contingency of pipers and drummers at the front of the parade. They played us through and did a wonderful job.
We all retired to the hospitality room for a well deserved refreshment, did I mention that this was the hottest day of the year for Toronto (one of the reasons for the city wide black out the previous evening).
Through our hospitality room we had a bird's eye view of the remaining parade, and it lasted well past 4 hours.
The main contingency of Moslem attended a special concert led by The Letterman. Carrie and I decided to forgo the concert and we took a cab to Little Italy and dined a wonderful little bistro. I had a delicious venison chop with an italian fig demiglaze (my mouth is still watering from the thought of that meal). We walked around a little, had some ice cream and headed back to the hotel.
The Highlanders were getting ready for their Pub Crawl, and were in the room with some fellow Higlanders from Chicago. Before they took off they asked Carrie and I to join them in the lobby and once again, along with the Chicago crew, played for about 20 minutes. It was great to see everyone come out of every room, restaurant, outside to watch them perform.
Both Carrie and I were tired and from all that walking I really needed to rest my legs, so around 11:30 we hit the hay.
Wednesday morning, the skyline looks beautiful as I write this and we are getting ready to visit Casa Loma, before going to the Convention center this afternoon for the Public Relations Seminar, and then it is off to see the Blue Jays destroy the Minnesota Twins, to help our beloved Tigers stay in first.
Great town, Great times. I Love being a Shriner

Toronto - Day 2
On Monday morning Carrie and I greeted all the ladies from our Shrine Center in addition to several others from other temples in our hospitality suite for eye openers prior to the Ladie's Luncheon. They left around 10:30 to attend and our photographer gathered them all in the hotel lobby for a beautiful photo.
I then entertained some visiting guests from other temples and took a long walk around downtown for several hours.
Our elected Temple Imperial Representatives (Chief Rabban, Assistant Rabban, High Priest and Prophet and Oriental Guide)attended the opening of the Imperial Council Session and made Moslem proud by their participation in the voting on several key items.
The highlight of their meetings is that the newly elected Imperial Outer Guard is none other then the current Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Erie Shriners Hospital for Children, as well as a very good friend of Moslem. We are all proud of that the Imperial delegation elected a future leader that will make a positive impact on Shrinedome. It was indeed a good day for the Shrine.
At around 4:00 P.M. our talented Highlanders arrived in town and began their day with some camel's milk and had a good time.
We had to leave to walk towards the harbor, in order to arrive at our Dinner Cruise Ship. Along with 65 other Nobles/Ladies form Moslem, we shared the ship with contignencies from Bahia Shriners (Orlando), Sahib Shriners (Sarasota), Melha Shriners (Springfield, MA), Sphinx Shriners and Pyramid Shriners (Connecticut). We had a lovely 3 hour cruise with dinner. I believe that we were the lucky ones in the dowtown area, because the power went out throughout downtown for about 3 hours, the same time we were on the cruise. The cool breeze off the lake was incredible and the majority of us gathered on the top deck to watch the very scenic view of the Toronto Skyline. Our photographer was in his elements taking photos at every direction. I was asked, with the other Potentates on board to steer the ship (don't worry it was for about 20 seconds until I had my photo taken at the helm).
Afterwards, we went to congratulate our newly elected Imperial Outer Guard, who had the biggest smile I have ever seen on someone. All his friends and family gathered at their hotel for celebration. We only stayed a little while and headed back to our hotel.
What a surprise to see 8-9 Highlanders awaiting to perform for our contingency. We headed down to the lobby at 11:30 P.M. and they performed for about 20 minutes, in which time the gathered crown increased from our party to about 100 people who were very happy. One spectator, a lovely lady from Scotland, was caught up in the moment and performed some traditional Scottish dance. It was great, especially their great rendition of "The Victors".
I tried to hang with the Highlanders and our staff for a little while, but was so tired I hit the hay around 2:30 A.M.
Day 3 Preview: The Imperial Parade staging begins at 11 A.M. We will have the honor of her majesty's presence when she will drive pass to a 21 gun salute at noon. It has been interesting to see her majesty's motorcade traveling throughout town. I believe this is her final day prior to leaving for New York City.

Toronto 2010
Over 65 Shriners and Ladies from Moslem are in Toronto with 10000 other Shriners and their ladies.
We set up the Hospitality Suite in the Presidential Suite of the Sheraton Centre, the 41st floor overlooking the skyline of Northern Downtown Toronto. Beautiful!!!!!!!
The Queen arrived last night and we saw her this morning going to church. Her entourage carried over 15 baggage carousels of luggages. One of our Nobles saw a very built soldier in a crisp blue uniform and many glistening medals carrying a metal case with the "Tower of London" initials, a perfect fit for the crown. Very extravagant.
We went down to the harbour to see the Imperial Shrine Yacht Club and the Tall Ships this afternoon and then attended the Public Opening of the Imperial Council Session. Things have gone very smooth and everyone is happy.
We are going to walk over to China Town for dinner and get ready for some entertainment this evening, Shrine Style.
Miss you all, wish you were here.
Much Love

Six Months, Six Months, Six Months, I cannot believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I woke up this morning for the first time in 10 days without any pain. I beleive that I have kicked this pleurisy and about time, we are leaving in less than 48 hours to head out to Toronto.
I have been laying low this week, although last night I was invited to attend a gathering to support a person running for governor. I had a very good time, and was able to speak about the Shriners to many politicians in attendance, a couple of which had attended the circus in March.
I was amazed by the amount of people who knew of the Shriners, our good work and events around town, especially in parades.
I thought it went well and perhaps assisted in some future potential ventures.
I think that I will send some blogs from Toronto, so check back and see how things are proceeding.
